Hi all!

So I get a lot of questions from fans and friends about songwriting, so I thought I would share some of my process with you. It was tempting to make songwriting “advice” posts, but really, what works for some doesn’t work for others - so, I would just like to make some short weekly posts about what works for me, and hopefully it will be insightful to fans and helpful to other artists and writers! I’ll call it “Song Space” - feel free to respond, repost, or add your own ideas! I’d love to hear from you.

For this first post, I will speak a little about my overall process!

Entry #1: The Rescue

On a trip to Italy a few years ago, I heard a tour guide tell a group that Michelangelo would see the sculpture in the marble and try to rescue it by chiseling away at the marble.

Supposedly, he described it like this:

“In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and in action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.”

I was so excited by this because I felt like this was a really accurate description of my process as a songwriter, which I had never been able to articulate before this. I like to think that the song already exists in space, and I just have to rescue it. I can always tell when words or melodies are “space holders” for something I haven’t come up with yet - I can always tell when the pieces don’t fit. I also recognize the excitement of the moment when you find a missing piece. When I wrote “New Hands,” I wrote the verses first, and it took months before I could find the right “piece” - which was the chorus, the place for the words “New Hands” that woke me up from a dream in the middle of the night. Maybe I do this because I think this approach also takes the pressure off the artist as an individual - to think that something already exists, in perfect form and beauty, and my responsibility is to simply to rescue it- without bruises, wear, or tear. Just take the pressure off myself to create something from nothing, and think instead about discovering the safest passage from the idea’s home in the air to my fingers as they meet the guitar.
